Don't Blink. Staring Down Fear is More Than Just a Cliché.

I can think of ten things offhand that many people fear. Fear of: ... spiders ... the unknown ... heights ... public speaking ... closed spaces ... public places ... the dark ... people ... failure ... success Sure some of these may not all apply to you. Maybe none of them do. Some are more mundane. (Spiders: what's to like?). Others may be avoidable to a certain extent (Public speaking: don't like it, don't do it). Others may seem way off base. (Who is scared of success?) And, maybe on your list there is something that other people would laugh at. I know someone who has a fear of stickers. She knows it sounds crazy, but she can't help it. Professional rivalry is a real thing. And it isn't a bad thing. Rivalry and competition give an edge — they push you to be the best that you can be, they make you think strategically, they force you to see the bigger picture. Very importantly, they give you perspective on where you are in relation to the people around you and in terms of your distance from your goals. So here's a scenario for you: the other day I participated in a contest of sorts: different people pitching their ideas, each one hoping for a chance of success. We were seated in a narrow corridor, waiting for our turn to enter the room. As each person left to be judged they exited the room, and turned back to the rest of us,
