To the Person on the Verge of a Major Life-Changing Decision
You know who you are. I know that you are nervous. I know that there are pros and cons on both sides of your decision. I know that your thoughts and incessant mulling over the issue is weighing you down. I know that the decision you need to make affects you not only professionally, but will also have a major impact on your personal life. I know this scares you.
In all decisions there is often the easier, more convenient path. And then there is the alternative – the road generally not taken, because it is scarier, unknown, riskier. It is trite to say that taking a new path may lead to greater rewards and optimal self-actualisation. (Then again, it may not. There are no certainties. There are no guarantees.) However, if you never try, you will never know.
It certainly is easier not to make a major change. Especially since you have everything you need in the here and now: stability, familiarity, and a clear understanding of what you need to do to sustain your success. But, here's the thing: there is so much to learn by stepping out of your comfort zone. There is so much to gain – whether your decision leads you to your fantasy outcome or not. You have an opportunity to declare to yourself: I can do this. I believe in myself. And, come what may – I will grow from this decision, and come out stronger, and better, and wiser on the other end. That declaration – that statement of self-affirmation – is the first and hardest step. No one can do it for you. But once it is out there, there will be no stopping you. So really, the question is: are you ready to believe in yourself?
