Congratulations! You Have Reached The Middle

One of my favorite childhood poems is A. A. Milne's "Halfway Down". It is a short poem that captures the essence of being neither at the top, nor at the bottom. In this poem, being in the middle is not meant to be disparaging, it is meant to be a state in itself.

And here we are, soon reaching the mid-year mark. In organizations across the world mid-year retrospection and reviews will begin. We will check ourselves, our strategies and our results. We will work to recalibrate and redefine where we are versus where we want to be. But:

- will we celebrate the milestone?

- will we acknowledge the journey?

- will we dare to imagine the destination isn't what we intended, but like in the poem "it's somewhere else instead"

I propose that from now on we celebrate being in the middle: the middle of the year, the middle of a project, the middle of a pregnancy, the middle of a book, the middle of learning something new.

I propose that we perch on the middle step, like Christopher Robin, and think " funny thoughts" and imagine that whether we are halfway up or halfway down the rest of the journey is going to be amazing...
